Yves Saint Laurent returns to Paris
Jun 3rd, 2010 by apartmentblogger
Yves Saint Laurent is undoubtedly one of the great icons of fashion, and his designs marked a paradigm shift as far as femininity and elegance is concerned. The visionary designer took traditionally male clothing such as suit jackets and and pants and tailored them to the female body in a visonary way, which metaphorically gifted women with sartorial symbols typically attributed to masculine garb. His infinite variations of the tuxedo for women are unforgettable, and defined the YSL woman as an elegant, strong and fresh creature. Also legendary are the dresses inspired by Mondrian, Picasso, Van Gogh and Matisse, such as the famous “Mondrian Dress” from 1965.

Now the Petit Palais in Paris commemorates this incredible artist with a vast retrospective of his work in his first posthumous exhibition. The show is divided into four sections, devoted to different aspects of his legacy: “The Stroke of a Pencil” collects his original drawings, on which Saint Laurent based his designs, while “The Yves Saint Laurent Revolution” is dedicated to demonstrating his most innovative designs, such as feminized male garments, passing to the “The Palette”, which investigates the designer´s use of colors, to finally get to “Lyrical Sources,” which highlights the varied and obscure inspirations, from literature to contemporary art and fashion that influenced his incredible avant-garde designs.
The designer not only inspired thousands of women, but also marked a turning point in women’s fashion, infusing it with a modern spirit. In 1971, his retro androgynous collection was definitely ahead of its time, and while some called his work “the ugliest in the city”, for many fashion historians, this collection marked the beginning of contemporary design.
The exhibition opened in April will be open until August this year. We encourage you to visit the capital of fashion and rent apartments in Paris, so you may appreciate the work of one of the most important visionaries in recent decades.
