There are parties that demand a complex and somewhat expensive dresscode: costumes, leather, latex, uniforms…But, sometimes, to be just perfectly dressed for the occasion you only need a bedsheet, a little skill and five minutes of your time. Let me introduce you to the world of toga parties!

These events were born on American colleges and university campuses, as a kind of crazy costume party with lots of good music, alcohol and scantily dressed young men and women having fun. A toga party was depicted in a very popular comedy film from 1978 called “Animal House”, starring John Belushi as Bluto in one of his better remembered roles in cinema. Being dressed in a makeshift toga has lots of advantages: it is fresh, very comfortable and easy to wear, sexy-looking and allows quick undressing if the party becomes increasingly hot and interesting…

Preparing a toga from a bedsheet or a similarly big piece of fabric is not really difficult: there are a lot of online tutorials with precise instructions for both male and female togas. You can use bedsheets of virtually any color and material: although the most typical outfit is a white linen toga, my personal recommendation would be to use purple silk to be dressed as an emperor! To finish the costume, you can add some optional accessories like sandals, bracelets, a laurel wreath, a rope belt or even a short sword… Then you can feel like a true Greek or Roman senator, ready to party with the Nymphs, satyrs and muses!

There are not many places in Barcelona where you can attend to a true toga party, but you can try to ask in the Scorpion’s Nesten (enelnidodelescorpion@gmail.com), a cultural non-profit association located in the centric Raval quarter. A couple of months ago they organised a toga party with strict dresscode, plenty of drinking, good eighties music, and indulged in a lot of fun and pleasant activities that could be described as swinger-friendly and BDSM-friendly… A toga party is always a nice occasion to follow your impulses, fantasies and inner feelings!

It is not necessary then to be on an American university campus to have fun at a toga party: you can rent apartments in Barcelona and just remember to bring your own bedsheet!
