The Story of the Forever 27 Club
Jun 1st, 2010 by apartmentblogger

Membership of this club will make you a legend. You will influence generations of music-lovers, who worship you. You’ll have the status of a semi-god, surrounded by mystery and intrigue. But this is the club no-one wants to be in. The Forever 27 club is dedicated to influential rock and blues artists who all died at the age of 27, under mysterious circumstances.
The first one to go, in 1969, was Brian Jones – the founder and guitarist of the Rolling Stones. He was found death at the bottom of his swimming pool after a party. Three people were present at the time (including his girlfriend Anna Wohlin), and though the autopsy showed heavy liver damage there were no indications of intoxication. Suspected is that he was murdered by Frank Thorogood. At his funeral, neither Keith Richards nor Mick Jagger bothered to show up.
Just one year later, another very talented artist went: Jimi Hendrix. He died of an overdose in London, but the circumstances are not very clear. Here’s what the police suspects. Jimi had been drinking wine all night long, but still he couldn’t sleep. He went searching for his friend’s sleeping pills, and while the normal dose is 1 tablet, he took 9. Probably because he thought that European sleeping pills would be weaker than American ones. Fact is he lost consciousness pretty quickly, but after a while he started to vomit. The wine he brought up (and didn’t spit out because he was knocked-out) filled his lungs and he never woke up.
Do you remember the song ‘Piece of my heart’? It’s by Janis Joplin, an amazing woman who played at the legendary Woodstock festival in 1969. One year later she was dead. She was addicted to amphetamine, and later to heroine. That fatal night she bought heroine from her regular dealer, who accidentally sold her pure heroine. She must have been death within minutes.
And it’s not over yet. The fourth 27 year old had to go in 1971: Jim Morrisson of The Doors. There are many bizarre theories about his death. Some say he died of an overdose in a nightclub, and that the dealers dragged him back to his apartment to let him die there. Others say he was coughing up blood before going to sleep that night, or that he bled to death. There was no autopsy performed and the official cause of death is heart failure.
One of the last tragic deaths was Kurt Cobain in 1994. He was found in his home with a shotgun wound to the head and supposedly killed himself. But there is a lot of evidence that suggests murder.
That makes 5 young artists who all died at the age of 27. Check for their albums and records on garage sales or flea markets. Maybe you’ll find what you are looking for in the Marche-aux-puces de St. Ouen in Paris? Rent the best apartments in Paris and go hunting for treasures.
