Antoni Tàpies: Matter exhibition in the Tàpies Foundation
Sep 14th, 2010 by apartmentblogger
On 13 August, Antoni Tàpies Foundation presented a new selection from the depths of its vast collection. The starting point will be the work Fusta pintada i rascada (painted and scraped wood) which will be on display publicly for the first time.

This work contextualizes the exhibit which shows of lesser known facets of this internationally important artist, one of the most influential Spanish artists living today.
The exhibit will from from August until September 26th, and if you’re spending your days apartments in Barcelona, don´t miss it! The exhibit explores the supremacy of material during more than 60 years of the creative life of this great Catalan artist.
Tàpies Foundation, which was reopened last March, wants on this occasion to highlight the importance of materials for the artist. The works shown in this new selection have been chosen by Tàpies and include many materials and media, like torn or rubbed papers, a box, colored gauzes, or wood. Thanks to his deft hands they have been transformed into works of art.
In these cases, the artist intervenes moderately, as if looking to preserve the objectivity of the material. However, his interventions clearly show his distinctive style. Thus, in his language we see the familiar colors, rips, writings and gesture, so frequent in his work.
Thus we find in works like Capsa de cordills (twine box), 1946, Collage of paper currency (Collage of paper money), 51; Ratlla i empremtes (stripes and prints), 1956. We also find the bibliophile´s book: El pa a la barca (The bread in the boat), 1963, Cartó amb T negra (Carton with black T), 2000, or i Matèria cartons (Matter and cartons), 2006, among others.
This encounter with the work of creative powerhouse Antoni Tapies amazes us with his efforts and versatility.
