Over a century ago Marinetti shook the art world with that wonderful sentence in the Futurist Manifesto in which he decreed that in a race car there was more beauty than in the Victory of Samothrace. This was the apotheosis of the celebration of speed and machines, which museums found art absurd and redundant and that it should be destroyed or used without hesitation, perhaps even as automotive circuits in a pendulum motion that would have included the conversion of the old Hippodrome of Domitian into the disturbingly beautiful Piazza Navona during the peak time of the Roman Baroque.

The world was living the fascinating new thresholds of times, but what characterized 1909 was that its vertigo was the result of the rhythmically unusual and violent drive of motor machine. If the twisting motion of curves, shapes and folds of art and architecture, mirrored the new universe which then looked at the neatly polished crystals by Spinoza and Leibniz, one of the most characteristic features of Baroque, it will also be a dynamic characterizing of a futuristic world that heralded a hundred years ago, a world in perpetual motion, however labeled at this particular time by speed and all its possibilities. A world where objects and figures in the pictures are moved mechanically, poetry is an engine that produces images of countless industrial revolutions and grammar and vocabulary deliberately distorted in the interest of onomatopoeia, filming the ideal means expression par excellence, thus theater, the forerunner of the performance, a dizzying succession of numbers of varieties and music an art of sound that aspires to a mechanized and dynamic condition.

One hundred years later those same vehicles that so fascinated so enthusiastically the Futurists as image and promises of the future for the present living have become objects of nostalgia that bring us back to the past by cultivating necessarily nostalgia, which is probably very characteristic of an age like ours, undergoing a crisis of such dimensions, including the Maya year and preferring to look back to look into the future that only seems to notice the blackest tones.

From the 1st to the 5th of February at the Porte de Versailles in Paris, where paradoxically Le Figaro published the Futurist Manifesto, celebrates the thirty-sixth edition of Retro Mobile (http://en.retromobile.com/) a veritable living museum of automotive history where we can admire the legendary models of the Belle Epoque and the interwar period that raised the unqualified admiration of much of the avant-garde creations of the time.

Until the 26th of February, the exhibition ‘Cézanne et Paris’ will be open at the Musée du Luxembourg. The exhibition is organized with the collaboration of the Petit Palais and the Fine Arts Museum of the City of Paris. it gathers close to 80 works that come from different collections from around the world to explore the great subjects that Cézanne worked on, such as Paris, nudity, portraits and still life.

The exhibition, commissioned by Gilles Chazal, the director of the Petit Palais and Maryline Assante di Panzillo, curator of the Department of Paintings of the Petit Palais, tries to show a Cézanne that is actively looking to defy both tradition and modernity.

Paul Cézanne was born in Aix en Provence in 1839. Son of a bourgeois family, whose father was a wealthy banker, his studies took place in Bourbon College, where he established a close relation with Émile Zola. Despite his love for drawing and painting, he registered in the Law School to satisfy his father’s expectations. But his passion was stronger and he dropped out to fulfill his vocation.

His first studio was organized in his family’s country house and, by 1861, he moved to Paris, financially supported by his family. In Paris he met Zola again, and he signed up at the Swiss Academy to manage to pass the entry exam to the Fine Arts Academy. In his first incursion at the Louvre Museum, he was astounded by the works of Velázquez and Caravaggio, who marked his paintings.

He went back to Aix en Provence to work with his father for a short period of time and after he went back to Paris, set on continuing his studies in the Swiss Academy, where he met Pissarro and Guillaumin, who strongly influenced his work by liberating him from the aesthetic strictness of the academy.

In the Salon d’Automne of 1886, he presented his paintings for the first time, but was rejected. This would repeat itself on various occasions, without him ever abandoning painting, despite the deep frustration due to the rejection and the critique of his work, that obviously provoked this disappointment in him.

Annoyed with the art circle in Paris, he went to live with the model Hortense Fiquet to L’Estanque, where he developed prolific work, made up with landscapes and still life, made in natural sceneries just like impressionism demanded.

His return to Paris would be shaped by his landscape work at Louveciennes, but it would take until 1895 until he received recognition, when the art critic and merchant Ambroise Vollard organized a successful exhibition of his work, and Paris fell in love with him. In 1904, the Salon D’Automne was dedicated to his pictorial work. Two years later, Cézanne died, leaving behind an open wound in art avant-gardes.

His work opened the door to fauvists and cubists and it inspired surrealists such as Picasso, Dérain and Braque, among many others.

They say that dogs are man’s best friend. It has been said many times. But, of course, there are cats. Unlike cats, dogs tend to join and understand us perhaps a little more. It is said that dogs develop greater dependence on their owners than cats. Perhaps this is a mistake. There are cats like dogs, who are carriers of affection and attention and are always attentive to the character of their masters, their moods, and provide affection and warmth when needed.

Cats characters are very different of course. Perhaps a little more lonely, not quite up to the herd instinct that dogs usually preserve. Thus, apparently a domesticated dog seems to be more docile than a domesticated cat. But we should not trivialize dogs for this innate instinct of “family” they have.
Having a dog at home requires much care. Its not just about good nutrition and caring, but also giving them the space to enable them to exercise, to be comfortable, to walk , to give them our affection. Dogs tend to be more attentive to their masters and therefore, develop a protective character for their primary caregivers. Hence, since ancient times, dog companion has always been the protector of camps, and homes, in turn the hunter and the keeper of sheep. Trained perhaps out of habit, nobility genetic information from one generation to another, dogs are with us through thick and thin.

Paris offers many facilities if you have a pet and you want to go to live there. And of course, the structure of the city itself allows you without a doubt to find recreational spaces for your dog. The streets you can walk with your pet are beyond beautiful, besides being very well taken care of and having that romantic feel that you both will enjoy. Similarly, there are many free spaces and areas where your dog can walk and walk comfortably. Of course there are areas reserved for pets where it is also possible that your pet can socialize with others, In Paris, in addition, there are plenty of pet stores where you can find some of the finest products for your best friend.

There are many dog breeds in the world. To point them all out would be somewhat difficult. In each region there are different races and each race has different personalities from others, thus, the Canine Society of L’Ile de France is organizing this international presentation on the 7th and 8th of Jan. to learn more about all these types of dogs who walk the streets of Paris.

Until January 8th, 2012 the Masion Européenne de Photographie in Paris exhibits Klein+ Rome, based on photographs taken during the filming of Rome (1972) directed by Federico Fellini. The exhibition curated by Alexandra Mauro seeks to highlight the work of still photography in the twentieth century film work, where great directors met with great photography artists at the set.

William Klein was born in New York in 1926. He attended the City College where his beginnings were as a graphic designer working for the U.S. magazine Stars and Stripes. At the end of the 40′s he moved to Europe and enrolled at the Sorbonne to study art history, becoming friends with the Cubist painter Fernand Leger. Being young and impulsive, in a Europe still affected by World War II equality was proclaimed and led by Jean Paul Sartre, Simon de Beauvoir, Herbert Marcuse, whom among others filled the intellectual curiosity of Klein.

His final reach out to reality was by approaching photography that explored cutting-edge images. Although photography will occupy a special place in his work, other artistic and intellectual concerns occupy his time such as painting, which will result in geometric art pieces with strong defined character. These works will be exhibited at the Il Milione Gallery 1952 in Milan .

In the middle of the decade of the 50′s he began working as a photographer for Vogue magazine, which publishes an interesting series of his fashion images. With his unique style he imprints an definite style in the magazine, a new fashion with his own aesthetic criteria of the photographic art of the time while raising the value of the image from its composition and the use of light. But his purpose was not to remain as the magazine photographer, as he pointed out on numerous occasions, so he began to focus on more serious photo work.

The first serious work that gave him the opportunity to meet Federico Fellini was his photographic book about the streets of New York City. While in Paris, he sets a meeting with Fellini to deliver the book, but the book has been on the bedside of the filmmaker, for a long time who then invited Klein to come to Rome as his filming assistant . At 33 he proposes the director to do a documentary about Rome

Rome is a documentary which includes all of the Fellini style, where the grotesque and the beautiful blend together to create worlds of denial. The film shows the reality of contradictions, where characters appear in a brothel next to a fashion show of the Catholic Church and where workers fight against the police, and all this packed with nostalgia, satire and profound rebellion against the status quo.

Despite that the phenomenon began much before, few things probably set the standard better than one of the most characteristic elements of postwar Western societies as the weight loss diets, a perfect mirror where we can see the comes and goings of fashion and the market and its conflictive relation with the increasingly questioned scientific and media truths.

Firstly, although it’s not clear that things happen exactly in that order, we’ve been getting used to in a growing way, generation after generation, to consume large quantities of food which are high in saturated fat, additives, and colouring products and sweeteners of all types, at the same time that they tell us to consume them quickly (there’s no time to lose, we have to keep on producing and consuming, better not think too much about it) and they give us together with it a lifestyle which is more and more sedentary all the time.

It doesn’t seem unlikely that in these conditions we tend to gain weight and distance ourselves from our previously established ideal weight, and it’s then when a disproportionate media pressure is executed on us (especially on women, men are always allowed a more elevated number of things), to consume new products and miraculous formulas that will make us lose those extra pounds, by the way in which they’re presented we could label them unpleasant and obscene, equivalent to some sort of moral stain, in a harmonic way with that intimate connexion in some way present from the beginning between capitalism and religious puritanism – like in the Christian medieval mentality, and in general up until the 19th century, both the rich and poor were far from reflecting the moral value of the people, the development of capitalism and the supposed meritocracy which went with it, were investing the possession of the money and the superior moral qualities firmly establishing a patron according to which, financial failure was associated to moral shame and the lack of purchasing power was considered not only as something pitiful but also as fundamentally deserved.

The latest miraculous diet whose results have been left in evidence is the famous Dukan diet, eighty percent of whose followers, according to the National Health Security Agency of French Food (ANSES), don’t seem to recuperate their ideal weight in the first twelve months after the diet but they’re also susceptible to have kidney alterations and other health complications.

The studies of ANSES are along the lines of those who say that the non-adulterated Mediterranean diet (based on salads, vegetables, fruit, legumes, fish, little meat and around one or two glasses of wine per meal) is not only extremely pleasant but the one that guarantees stable weight loss, even when it’s enriched by some extra olive oil and nuts.

The Smashing Pumpkins are one of the most important bands in terms of alternative music. With Billy Corgan at the front as their born leader, the band had a lot to say and ended up representing the youth of a generation with songs that ended up being anthems.

The band was born in Chicago in 1988 and, after 12 years, ended up splitting up just to come back with a different formation in 2006. Today, the band members are Billy Corgan on guitar and vocals, Mike Byrne on drums and of just 19 years of age, Nicole Florentino on bass and Jeff Schroeder on rhythm guitar. Despite it not being the same as the original band, the songs still sound just as strong and they fill all their shows with thousands of fans singing along.

The Smashing Pumpkins presented along its history eight LPs and, a while ago, they announced that their ninth album would carry the name ‘Oceania’, but it got delayed. It was going to be presented on the 1st of September 2011 but it was postponed until November. Many rumours say that it could even be delayed until 2012. The truth still remains unknown.

Anyway, many of the songs on ‘Oceania’ are already finished and, for that reason, Billy Corgan and co. are already playing them in their live shows. Currently, the band is touring around the world playing their classic and famous songs as well as their new ones.

Cutlog is a contemporary art fair which is taking place from the 20th until the 23rd of October in the Paris Stock Exchange, a historical building in the heart of the French capital. For this third edition, once more, Cutlog will gather emerging artists, international galleries and the great public under one theme: being an alternative to the large events, such as FIAC, the international Contemporary Art Fair in Paris.

Fans, artists, critics, collectors, museum directors, preservationists and other professionals of the art world will have a rendez-vous with some 40 French and foreign galleries whose common point will be avant-garde and the discovery of what’s ‘under the radar’. One thousand sq metres will be dedicated of giving visibility to new artists, to open theme conferences and debates and to programme exclusive projections. This year, the theme of the Cutlog artist film festival will be the Mediterranean: colours, singularities and novelties will arrive to the Paris Stock Exchange to offer a new outlook on contemporary art.

The Stock Exchange is a light and circular building located next to the famous Forum des Halles in the 1st Arrondissement in Paris, right in the centre, an attractive and strategic approach given that this historical monument beats the charm of the cold, white rooms of today’s museums. With its entrance decorated with a Corinthian porch and columns, its interior full of frescos, its ceiling with a glass dome and the floor made of tiles, the architecture of this old 12th century hotel, partly destroyed by a fire and renovated by order of the regime of Louis XVI of France, is the ideal place for art lovers.

The programme includes the Art/Cutlog prize which will reward an exhibiting artist on the Friday night of the 21st of October during the event. Both the originality, the belonging of the work and the artistic career as well as the coherence of the creative process will be decisive criteria for the selection of the 2011 winner of this prize. The world art market, the popularity factors, the trends, the artists in fashion and many other topics were held during last year’s conference cycle, more than any other artistic event. Cutlog highlights the laws that direct the international art industry and as first answer to its code, it exhibits works and new concepts, far from the large fairs where the artists look like brands.

All the works presented during the four days will be online: a virtual version that will allow collectors and other interested people to discover and acquire the works of these unknown talents. From the 10th until the 12th of November, Cutlog will become Cutlog Photo and will present some 30 art galleries, also in the Paris Stock Exchange. For more information: http://www.cutlog.org/cutlog-art/

If you need a dosis of though, pleasure, non-conformity and discovery, Cutlog will be the perfect event. For its location, you’ll be able to put together some shopping at Les Halles, a visit to the Centre Pompidou, located a couple of streets away, and a walk in the gardens of the Louvre. The art of enjoyment is also achieved by renting apartments in Paris

The Ville de Paris Modern Art Museum inaugurates, on the 18th of October, the exhibition ‘Any Ever’ by the North American conceptual artists Ryan Trecartin and Lizzie Fitch, where they explore through videos, exhibitions and sculptures the intergenerational relations in the world of cultural consumerism through the absurd.

Ryan Trecartin and Lizzie Fitch are a couple in art. They both studied design in Rhode Island School and live and work in Los Angeles. Their work is difficult to narrow down because in each of them they mix concepts, theatre, objects and images that, all together make a magnificent proposal to think.

Trecartin is considered an innovator and creator of new frontiers in the world of art and film. His work has generated tremendous influence among the new art exponents and theorists who see his proposal as a conceptual aesthetic challenge to visual culture of contents, moving the barriers of queer aesthetics.

While Trecartin made his artistic work as a theatre director, because he incorporated various people who he directed and coordinated in each sculpture or exhibition work, Fitch is in charge of production. In the videos, Trecartin makes the texts and directs, while Fitch is in charge of editing and post-production.

The work that these two artists perform together began in New Orleans, though the search of common codes that allowed them to achieve aesthetic adventure of expressing a feeling on society. Despite their conceptual productions touching controversial aspects in society, the humour and irony with which they work has left a mark, managing a high valuation of their work by the critics.

It’s not a common relationship, the one between Trecartin and Fitch, because their works are the result of the creativity of one and the ability to organize of the other. ‘Any Ever’ is an interesting mash-up of video art of the exhibition, maybe a little stressful and with a carefully studied anarchy, where various videos are projected simultaneously and without order, while the spaces are with traditional furniture, one like a living room, one like a public place and the third one as a normal bedroom, somewhat disorganized.

The reality is that the exhibition is confusing at times, surprising in others and it’s enjoyable in its totality. That’s what art is like, a creation that has to cause emotions. In this exhibition, the irony on normality and abnormality is implicit in the whole work, you just have to see it and look at it carefully in each of the deliberate details, stop, sit down and watch the videos.
