Beer is a tradition in Germany and a ritual that the Germans can not give up as well as being an integral part of their culture. The historical importance of German beer comes from a law called “Reinheitsgebot,” which was enacted in 1500 which still remains in force in some German cities today. It prohibited the use of poor quality materials in the production process of this great beverage. It was said that they were witches who made the fermentation process possible, but over time, people saw that the substance that rose to the surface was yeast and that this was the cause of fermentation. However, it was Louis Pasteur who discovered that the real cause of the fermentation were microorganisms which transforms the malt into alcohol and carbon dioxide.

All cities have at least one brewery. The world’s oldest still in operation is the Weihenstephan Abbey, located in the Bavarian town of Freising. In total there are about 1,300 breweries in Germany and a production of over 5,000 brands. Half of the German brewers say it’s a Bavarian.

Thanks to this wide variety, almost every village has its own beer, and sometimes more than one. Let’s talk about the name “Tacheles“. This is an old word in Hebrew which means “reveal” or “speak clearly”. In the beginning it was constructed as a commercial centre in the year 1907 under the rule of the emperor Friedrich Wilhelm Viktor von Hohenzollern and so it received the name Friedrichstraßenpassage.

Over the decades the building was used as the Haus der Technik which was a huge exhibition space where technical products were presented and sold to customers. The national socialists used this building as well as an administration building and on the 5th floor they kept the prisoners of the French war. During the second world war the building was damaged by the bombs, but it wasn’t completely destroyed.

In the GDR the building was used for the purpose of the Free German Trade Union Federation and the National People’s Army and it was transformed even more into a ruin. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, the movement, which was formed by uncountable artists from all over the world, occupied the building and since then they have been fighting against its demolition, although it is under a preservation order.

TACHELES is divided into different artistic spaces which will captivate you. Der goldene Saal, the golden hall, was known in the GDR as the cinema “camera”. Berlinale 2009

Berlin is a cosmopolitan and multicultural city and as such, every year (since 1951) it celebrates one of the most important film festivals in the world: The Berlin International Film Festival, this year being its 59th edition. More than 19,000 film professionals from 120 different countries will gather in the German capital next February (5th to 15th) to celebrate this epic event. With more than 200,000 tickets sold, this festival is much more than just a film event. During these two weeks, art, culture and the most glamorous and fashionable parties will take place here in Berlin. Parallel to this year’s event is a festival of films for children, an international youth cinema forum and another event showing German films.

The Berlinale is a showcase for German films par excellence. The highlight of the ceremony is the gold and silver Bear awards granted by an international jury in different categories. Films that are competing from the world over will also be premiered at the festival. British actress Tilda Swinton who won an Oscar for her supporting role in the film Michael Clayton (2007) will be the president of the jury for this year’s Festival.

A film by German director Tom Tykwer, “The International” will officially open The Berlin International Film Festival 2009. This film, with Clive Owen and Naomi Watts as the main stars will be the highlight of the festival, since it is the current work of Germany’s most popular film director. Also, by participating in the Berlinale this will also serve as a prelude to its international premiere.

Another thing to watch out for is American actor Joe Dallesandro who will receive an award as a tribute to his career. Squatters in Berlin

The squatters’ movement was born in England in the 60s, but soon it spread to other European cities such as Berlin. This is linked to the punk and underground culture. While almost everywhere squatting was considered an illegal movement, in Germany it was legalized from the 90’s and because of this Berlin became the capital of the squatting movement. It adopted the name of “Instandbesetzen”: it is the union of two words that mean to renew and to occupy.

Some of the most important Berlin hallmarks are the squatters’ houses. Although in the past five years the city has undergone a huge transformation due to the construction of new examples of modern architecture such as the Potsdamer Platz, Berlin is still today the preferred city of the squatters and the centre of the punk movement. On the east side of the city (especially in the Mitte neighbourhood) there is a special cultural, political and social ambient. There are squatter’s houses everywhere: after their legalization, many of them have become cultural centres. In addition, there have emerged lots of different types of premises such as bars or specialized bookshops.

This culture is so deep rooted in Berlin that they don’t only squat in flats and houses but also take over entire buildings and streets. There are squatters who even live in train wagons or trucks, crammed into squares or waste grounds, creating huge villages.

Mitte, Prenzlauer Berg and Friedrichschain (all in East Berlin), are the districts with the most squatters. There is a subculture of autonomy, spontaneity and improvisation.

Tacheles was squatted in 1990 by a group of young artists from different parts of the world. What started being a simple squatter’s house, is today one of the most famous alternative cultural centres of Berlin. Since the Wall’s fall, Tacheles has combined its anarchist ideals with its artistic projects. The building has been declared a historical monument and incorporates exhibitions, theatres, and a famous café (Zapata’s Coffee)… It has gained influence as an international culture centre, both positively and negatively.

The centre has received some recognition from Berlin’s public administration and therefore receives some yearly subsidies for its funding as a result. The rest of its revenues comes from the artists’ rentals and the bar’s benefits. The architecture of the area and its run-down appearance, as well as its international artistic activity, have turned Tacheles into a worldwide famous centre.
