See Italy and Die. Photography and Painting in 19th-Century Italy
The famous Orsay Museum in Paris is holding a wonderful photographic exhibition: “See Italy and die, photography and painting in Italy in the nineteenth century.” This way, through photographs and paintings of several famous artists, it is possible to trace Italian history through the 19th century. The works are located in four rooms in which the Italian landscape is rediscovered through non-national works of painters of the first half of 1800. The exhibition shows the consecrated daguerreotype process, several monuments and cityscapes, pictures of the Roman Photography School, including the Fashion Grand Tour in the second half of 1800, the Risorgimento, the archaeological studies of Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius, the portrait of the Italian people with all its clichés (the cunning, the beautiful women and the sweet feeling of doing nothing).

This unique museum was built by the architect Victor Laloux in 1898. What is today the museum was once the old cavalry barracks and the old palace of Orsay. The museum was built in only two years with the aim of opening it for the Universal Exhibition of 1900.
On the ground floor the works of the 1848-1870 periods are displayed. This is the least known period of impressionism, but its base. Among the major works by Monet there are The Magpie and The Origin of the Courbet World. In the central hall there are exposed the sculptures from the nineteenth century after the Neoclassical tradition. The mezzanine floor displays works of the Art Nouveau period. There are also sculptures by Rodin, as well as other examples of sculpture, decorative arts and painting. The top floor is certainly the most impressive. Here you will find the paintings of famous Impressionist and Post Impressionist artists.
From May 5th to July 19th the Photo Exhibition in Italy will be held among so many works of art and centuries of history. The visiting hours are from 9:30am to 18:00pm, except on Thursdays when it is open till 21:45. The museum will remain closed on Mondays.
Through photography, the exhibition aims to reflect the history of Italy and to display its emotions. The main objective is trying to show the major places of European culture and the perfect adaptation of the ancient world in the contemporary populations.
