Pipilotti Rist and the Electronic Rainbow of Emotion

Artist Pipilotti Rist is almost a rarity in the contemporary art world, creating installations and videos that win awards and inspire long articles on their theoretical bases, yet simultaneously, are colourful, cheerful and well, fun. They deal with issues surrounding feminism, psychology, love, hallucination, myth and pop culture, and are accessible to a variety of audiences. A deft sense of sense of humour is always present in her work.

Besides being a very talented, innovative video producer, she usually composes the soundtracks for her installations and sometimes sings. Her reinterpretations of familiar songs and original tracks have a way of making these known sounds new and strange, transporting viewers to a world apart. As with the artist Yayoi Kusama, her vivid works approach serious themes armed with all the different shades of the rainbow. Such colours shock the viewer out of their humdrum, grey everyday, and allow the artists to effectively define their alternative worlds. If there is anything that can sometimes turn people off with respect to contemporary art, is that it sometimes seems very serious, pessimistic, dry, or bland.
