From the 27th to the 29th of January 2012, the ‘addicts’ of streetwear fashion are back in Barcelona. How? The Brandery, the winter edition of urban fashion. This show for professionals, bron a few years ago, is a novelty because it’s not an exclusive show for stylists, brands and buyers; the public have their dosage of protagonism and they’re invited to actively participate. Fashion shows of prestigious brands take place in the original catwalk placed in the middle of the central pavillion (8) of the Fira de Montjuïc complex. Paying a minimum price, the visitors can stay for the afternoon in the bars and the chill out spaces eating tapas and enjoying the music of the most famous DJs in the city. Exhibitions of clothes, where they develop the new concepts of urban fashion, made for the numerous style and design schools of the city, will also be presented.

the brandery barcelona

The show is born this year under the concept ‘Love Your Way’, an invitation for people to create their own dressing style.

The numerous offers of fashion, music and design that are found at The Brandery offer a wide range of ideas and suggestions for all those who are looking for a new style, both personally and professionally.

Like in the past edition, The Brandery will develop in two areas: a space dedicated to the exhibitions of the brands and the professionals (with speed dating to make business) and another called ‘Xperience Brandtown Moda’, open to the public so that the visitors can attend the fashion shows (by stylists such as Custo Barcelona), listen to the live music of the Sonar artists or interact in person with the most prestigious brands.

A weekend dedicated to fashion.

The Brandery is unmissable for any person who is looking for inspiration for their style. The new motto, ‘Love your way’, indicates the need of each individual to identify a unique and personal image and style through fashion or art. To allow a bigger intake of public, the event will open its doors for the first time from Friday to Sunday.

The concerts and fashion shows at The Brandery.

Fashion and trends mix in the showpiece event of winter in Barcelona. In the previous edition, in July, with the help of Música Avanzada (Sonar), artists such as Ladytron, Nouvelle Vague, Hercules & Love Affair, Delorean Azari & III and Carlos Jean attended it, which attracted many fans. While the catwalk at The Brandery offers a great fashion show in movement, another focal point for the visitors is the ‘OTSF’ exhibition which presents initiatives of the most important design schools in Barcelona. Also, a space dedicated for thinking invites people to attend conferences by fashions gurus that offer a laboratory of ideas and explain the trends for the 2013 season.

It’s been nearly fourteen years since Lauryn Hill, who will offer a highly awaited concert in Berlin on the 26th of January (http://www.tempodrom.de/ms._lauryn_hill_2012-01-26_20.html), surprised everyone with her first solo album, ‘The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill’, an almost immediate classic that, already well in the second decade of a different century since the one it was made in, can easily be said that it has overcome all the tests that time brings.

lauryn hill berlin

Of course that from the singer from The Fugees it would have been difficult to find someone who wasn’t expecting anything food, but all the expectations were surpassed by an album that, in a decade characterized by its musical wealth and not precisely by the lack of memorable albums -responsible that independent music hit the top spots in the sales charts and giving, for a few years, an unusual and new shine to popular culture- stands out as an authentic landmark that is used as a bridge between different generations, updating a whole tradition so that it wasn’t lost in the frenetic rhythms of the times ahead.

Lauryn Hill herself has declared, in one of the incredibly rare occasions that she gives out interviews, that that was in great measure one of the aims of the album, to update the old vocal harmonies of the doo woop that she learned to love by listening to her parent’s albums, dressing them with the clothes of contemporary sounds that had meaning for the people of her generation, such as hip-hop, reggae or R&B, wisely mixing them with the spirit of soul.

It would be hard to think of an attempt that has ever obtained a higher artistic and commercial success simultaneously. Lauryn Hill was the first one to be surprised when finding out that the album that she’d made from the depths of her heart and with her whole honesty, simply so that the type of music that she enjoyed listening could exist in the world in an intimate way, that the wishes of millions of people were that they wanted to listen to the exact same sounds and rhythms. At the end of 1998, the year of its release, it was virtually impossible to find a single specialized publication whose list of best albums of the year wasn’t headed by ‘The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill’, which in February of 1999 won give of the eleven Grammys that it was nominated for, even album of the year, contributing in a decisive way to the task of clearing the path of the assimilation of hip-hop in popular culture, a task which was initiated by Outkast, Jay-Z or DMX.

In a more or less expected way, let’s think of Juan Rulfo for example, excepting sporadic shows and an MTV Unplugged, silence later ensued, which is in no way any less the declared contempt that Hill feels on the world of stardom.

From the 20th till the 29th of January, the Exhibition Centre Messe Berlin, Berlin-Charlottenburg will devote 26 of its rooms to the 77th International Green Week, one of the most famous events in Germany, which has gathered more than 78,000 exhibitors and 30 million visitors since its first edition eighty-six years ago.

international green week berlin

Although its origins in 1926, when up to one fifth of the area of the city was still engaged in agriculture and horticulture (it is estimated that in Berlin there were no less than 45,000 horses, 25,000 pigs, 21,000 heads of dairy cows and half a million poultry, so, up to 200,000 Berliners were cultivating their own piece of land) it was nothing more than a local market. With time it has evolved into the largest food fair for agriculture and horticulture in the world. On this fair dozens of countries have the opportunity to present their wide range of agricultural products to a vast audience from all continents.

The rapid expansion of the Green Week during the twenties and thirties had to do mainly with the large number of technical and scientific inventions presented on it: e.g. a curious device that served to demonstrate that dogs only follow the traces left by humans but not because of their smell or a giant rotating machine that allowed eggs to keep fresh for a period of a year.

The distinctive logo of the Fair, consist of two stylized yellow wheat spikes gracefully bending in the wind on a green background, which was designed in 1935 in accordance with the art-deco aesthetics by Wilhelm Holter. The same logo remains to this day the symbol of the event. A few years later came the war and the subsequent disruption of Green Week, which was not held again until 1948, in particularly harsh conditions (the three western sectors of the city, had only electricity supply from 11 pm to 1 am and from 9 to 11 am), which did not prevent the filing of a portentous nearly three kilos cucumber and a pumpkin of a half over forty. Due to the food scarcity, there are those who argued that this was the most glorious period of the Fair, when the week gained dimension with magic bordering desiring to be manifested in the scenic illusions of some of the places where statues convincingly made cardboard times ham and sausages.

Despite this the show continued to grow, overcoming all sorts of difficulties, including the construction of the infamous Berlin Wall in 1961. Precisely one year after Green Week held its first international edition, almost like a challenge.

What is visiting a city? At Only Apartments we make it clear: We are not tourists, we are travelers. But not everyone is really a traveler, or does not know how to be one, or is not interested, or simply because of time and money, has no choice but to hire travel services to explore the city. Sometimes an option is the Barcelona Tourist Bus service which can get you out of trouble, especially if your time is limited. However, you can explore the city on a day on your own, if you put your mind to it.

barcelona tourist bus

Some positive points of the Tourist Bus, is that you can see the main points of the city as a single route. If you prefer to only have a distant but precise approach of what you want to see, it serves its purpose perfectly. The ride usually lasts several hours and is presented in English for tourists from all locations. You can take pictures during the ride, and also, get a perspective on the city on public transport which is in itself a particular experience. The movement of the streets through the window or from the deck of the bus, is certainly valuable.

Another advantage of the tourist bus is the “family” experience that it allows. That is, to see the city with your family. If you travel with your parents, grandparents, uncles, and perhaps are a little older or neither have the patience nor the physical condition to walk the streets of Barcelona, or if you travel with your kids and walking becomes tedious or stressful for them, the bus tour gives them the opportunity to learn about the city without leaving your seat. So, travel comfortably and do not worry about schedules, people in the street, etc.. Similarly, if you only have a day to see the most recurrent areas of Barcelona, whether its most important avenues, the Gaudi buildings, the parks, it very practical to take the bus.

However, the shortness of stops sometimes at each location will make the viewing time reduced. Also, keep in mind that when you ride the bus as part of a “group” of tourists, at times it can be somewhat tedious for long bus stops crowd up with visitors. Similarly, the cost per trip can be expensive, and not suitable for all budgets. Again, it’s about thinking out what is best for you according to the available time you have for your visit to the city. As always, we recommend walking as much as possible, get lost in the streets of Barcelona, close to the attractions and mingle with people. Catalan’s modernism figure, Antoni Gaudí is one of the most representative of architects of the Spanish architecture. The personal character of his designs is very similar to the character of Barcelona, a city, which is essential for any traveler passing through Spain.

route gaudu barcelona

Gaudí’s architecture has a very unique baroque sensuality, curves that are woven into ovoid structures or structures that resemble the same as protruding bones, wrapped in color and sobriety. Similarly, Gaudí was able to combine in his finished works, other arts such as pottery, tiles, colorful stained glass and woodwork. Although Gaudí was a participant in the neo-Gothic art, it was him, who carried the Catalan modernist movement to the next level of expression during the late nineteenth and early twentieth century.

If one pays considerable attention to the Gaudí’s architecture, one finds in the fundamental approach of his designs with nature of organic and polymorphic nature of his designs. There is no doubt the great influence of Eastern art in Gaudi. It is impossible not to see the uterine involvement, to the Islamic mosques and domes volumes brought to everyday space. Here is a brief list of projects created by Gaudí that are essential to visit when you are visiting Barcelona:

Casa Batlló: This building was made in 1877 and is located on Passeig de Gracia Avenue. However, Gaudí remodeled between 1904 and 1906. Also known as the “House of Bones”, as it has an organic, skeletal and finished composition. The windows, interiors and entrances, are irregular in its composition and character, showing Gaudi’s rejection by straight lines.

Casa Mila, also known as “La Pedrera”, this building was built between 1905 and 1910, and was not completed until 1912. Also located on Passeig de Gracia Avenue, in the busy district of Eixample. This house was designed with the spiritual connotations of the time, as it has recurrent Catholic images inside, like the Virgin Mary and two archangels, including recurrent and sensual shapes, make this space a unique travel space.

La Sagrada Familia, Gaudí’s masterpiece. Pope Benedict XVI, recently proclaimed the church of the Sagrada Familia, a minor basilica. The construction of the church began around 1882, but it was not until the following year, in which Gaudí made present his participation that the project got its personal character. Thus, La Sagrada Familia, has part of an Art Nouveau influence and the same way, the particular vision of Gaudi on Gothic structures. Gaudi could not complete this work however; He spent the last years of his life on it.

Güell Park: This beautiful park is located in the district of Gracia, on the hill known as El Caramel. It was built between 1900 and 1914. From the Park Güell, Barcelona’s view is simply spectacular, reaching even the sea. The structures also have an organic character that create different levels in the park, are a stylish fusion between modern architecture and natural space, creating a unique dimension of entertainment in the city.

Until the 5th of February 2012, La Virreina Centre de la Imatge in Barcelona presents a great retrospective exhibition with the photographic work of the 20th century avant-garde French artist Claude Cahun. The exhibition is organized by the Jeu de Paume in Paris and co-produced by La Virreina Centre de la Imatge and The Art Institute of Chicago.

claude cahun barcelona

At the same time as the exhibition, La Virreina has made a series of activities which show the avant-garde character of Cahun and highlight the current effect of its aesthetic proposals with the contemporary discourses of the Queer theory, which poses sexuality as the result of a social construction, not biological, rejecting all the categories built from hegemonic vision, such as homosexuality, transsexuality, etc. due to their restriction of culture which underlies in these categorizations.

Among these activities, on the 10th of January there’ll be the conference ‘Paris was a woman’ and on Thursday the 19th of January 2012, the conference ‘Surrealism (Y) Queer’, and both will begin at 7pm at Espai 4.

In the Sala Xavier Miserachs they will screen the film ‘Playing a Part: the story of Claude Cahun’ by Lizzie Thynne. The film was made with previously unseen images and follows the surreal aesthetic of Cahun. It’s made with images from archives from different times, interviews to critics such as David Bate, Elisabeth Lebovici and Ann Caws that refer to the importance of Cahun in art, as well as interviews to people who knew her who give account of anecdotes of her life.

Lucy Renée Mathilde Schwob, Claude Cahun’s real name, was born in Nantes (France) in 1894 in a culturally refined atmosphere which brought her to opt to concentrate on literature and image, adopting the pseudonym in honour of her great-uncle Leon Cahun. Her outlook on the world, from the liberation of body and spirit, brought her to be conflictive in her time and equally ignored by the most important art circles.

At 26 years of age she moved to Paris with her partner Suzanne Malherbe, the real name of Marcel Moore, and began as a columnist of ‘Mercure de France’. During that period she mixed fundamentally with writers linked with dadaism and surrealism.

Parallel to writing and theatre, Cahun worked on photography and, in 1929, her images were first published in the magazine ‘Bifur’. A year later she published her autobiographical book ‘Aveux non avenus’, which she illustrated with photomontages.

Cahun participated in all political and trade union activities of the time, being an active militant of the Association of Revolutionary Writers and Artists, where she participated next to Breton and Bataille, with whom she would start the magazine ‘Contre Attaque’. During the Second World War she participated in anti-nazi actions with the Resistance, being arrested in the process.

Despite her work not being recognized during her lifetime, Cahun is today a reference of 20th century surrealism and avant-garde, as well as the new struggles linked to Queer politics.

They say that dogs are man’s best friend. It has been said many times. But, of course, there are cats. Unlike cats, dogs tend to join and understand us perhaps a little more. It is said that dogs develop greater dependence on their owners than cats. Perhaps this is a mistake. There are cats like dogs, who are carriers of affection and attention and are always attentive to the character of their masters, their moods, and provide affection and warmth when needed.

canine expo paris

Cats characters are very different of course. Perhaps a little more lonely, not quite up to the herd instinct that dogs usually preserve. Thus, apparently a domesticated dog seems to be more docile than a domesticated cat. But we should not trivialize dogs for this innate instinct of “family” they have.
Having a dog at home requires much care. Its not just about good nutrition and caring, but also giving them the space to enable them to exercise, to be comfortable, to walk , to give them our affection. Dogs tend to be more attentive to their masters and therefore, develop a protective character for their primary caregivers. Hence, since ancient times, dog companion has always been the protector of camps, and homes, in turn the hunter and the keeper of sheep. Trained perhaps out of habit, nobility genetic information from one generation to another, dogs are with us through thick and thin.

Paris offers many facilities if you have a pet and you want to go to live there. And of course, the structure of the city itself allows you without a doubt to find recreational spaces for your dog. The streets you can walk with your pet are beyond beautiful, besides being very well taken care of and having that romantic feel that you both will enjoy. Similarly, there are many free spaces and areas where your dog can walk and walk comfortably. Of course there are areas reserved for pets where it is also possible that your pet can socialize with others, In Paris, in addition, there are plenty of pet stores where you can find some of the finest products for your best friend.

There are many dog breeds in the world. To point them all out would be somewhat difficult. In each region there are different races and each race has different personalities from others, thus, the Canine Society of L’Ile de France is organizing this international presentation on the 7th and 8th of Jan. to learn more about all these types of dogs who walk the streets of Paris.

Barcelona continues with the same effort of not to propose something different. Just look at the party agendas, places, concerts, DJs, and to realize that a lot of effort, nothing is happening in Barcelona. Clearly, the city is fully empowered by the modern. But what is modern? Simple, the modern equivalent of a “hipster.” Modern is someone who dresses well, looks great, wears clothes from American Apparel and listen to music super “kitsch”, they like “the seedy” or valued it as a high aesthetic level. Generally, the hipsters of Barcelona are related to art, art criticism, curators of art and art makers. The figure of the “Indie Rocker” is spreading through the streets of Barcelona. The same music plays throughout the night dial: reggae, indie, electro and techno.

freak 'n roll barcelona
Many people come to Barcelona and stay. Perhaps the holiday spirit in this city never stops. By the same token, people end up caught in a chain of events from Facebook invited and deceived: social networks apparently show that something happens when it is not really. Furthermore, to counter some of the hipsters, the horde metalheads, hard rock, continues to believe that Guns N ‘Roses should get back with its original formation, or clear, Rage Against The Machine, is truly revolutionary, that Despite the millions they get in their pocket, they are protesting in behalf of Cuba, even when the band does no longer sound live. The high bastion of people stuck in the 60′s and the soul, groove, old dinosaurs who insist that the 60′s and pure rock, only made the 50′s and 60′s, and that the true rock died in 1969.

Against all this boredom, local fashion and fool pretty faces, Manchester Bar in the Gothic continues to offer some tasteful dark to the nights in Barcelona. With a long list of cocktails and beer, people from all over the dark meet in Manchester for a little chat, listen to some good music and make new friends. With several years being a necessary meeting point of the route at night in Barcelona, Manchester has won the hearts of Brit pop, new wave, Madchester, grunge, indie old and post punk fans, among other true delicacies.

Freak N Roll is a party where you will be able to listen to the best of neo-psychedelia: Black Angels, Dead Mantra, Soft Moon, White Hills, The Blue Angel Lounge, Mugstar and Moon Duo, among other new bands and certainly classics like Spacemen 3, Loop, Brian Jonestown Massacre and Suicide. This Saturday, the 7th of January, do not miss another session on Freak N Roll at Manchester bar in the Gothic. For more info, click here: http://www.facebook.com/freaknroll.barcelona

Until the 15th of February, 2012 the stage of the Teatro Romea de Barcelona will see all kinds of perversions and love conflicts. “Qui té por de Virginia Woolf?” In English “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” Is a fantastic and very interesting play, one of those that you don’t want to miss any detail of the plot.

play virginia wolf barcelona

Exciting fascinating

But, why would anyone be afraid of Virginia Woolf? First we need to know, if you didn’t already know, that Virginia Woolf was one of the most important writers of the twentieth century and one of the figures who have most contributed to the feminist cause. She was the one who invented the famous phrase “A woman must have money and her own room if you she is writing fiction,” and her great triumph was noted as a woman writer in a world totally dominated by men. The title of the play is a word game that comes from Walt Disney short “The Three Little Pigs.” “Who’s afraid of big bad wolf?” the men of the aristocracy of London might well have feared a writer fighter such as Virginia Woolf in her time.

“Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” began as a play, written by Edward Albee in 1962 and was exalted with his film adaptation only 4 years after being awarded with 5 Oscars and 8 nominations.

The adaptation we will see in the Teatro Romea is led by the Argentine Daniel Veronese and see how it Pere Arquillué, who plays George and Emma Vilarasau who plays Martha, are capable of anything on a Saturday night that does not seem to finish. Both husband and wife are psychologically mistreated during an evening using their knowledge of the dirt and weaknesses of the other. But the story is much more grotesque if we know that this happens before the bewildered eyes of their two hosts, a university professor and his wife, who will not escape to be relevant characters in getting to know some uncomfortable truths.

The dialogues perfectly draw the relationship problems of American society. The deception, frustration, taboos and perversion will pass before our eyes, turning us in those hosts who find themselves in a Nightmare.

The plot is gradually uncovering all sorts of unexpected secrets becoming more and more unexpected. This is a very emotional and visceral play that leaves aside the formalities to deal with a very revealing approach to relationships conflicts.

We do not want to reveal the secrets that will emerge in a strange Saturday night, we prefer you to discover them by yourself and enjoy a play that you don’t want to miss.

Fernando Paterna

If we are foreigners and we plan to go and see the play, renting apartments in Barcelona seem as a good option. It is very common and makes it easy to enjoy the city, an affordable option that will allow us not only to see “Qui té por de Virginia Woolf?”, but also discover a little more of one of the most interesting cities in the world.

Ferdinand Victor Eugène Delacroix was one of the leading figures of the Romanticism, revolutionary artist, innovator of classical and neoclassical style, which led him to earn harsh criticism at the beginning of his career, is without doubt one of the greatest French painters of the early twentieth century and of all time.

delacroix madrid

Delacroix was a so important artist that he was the first painter of the century, who challenged the strict rules of neoclassical art, inspiring painters such as Van Gogh. Delacroix was therefore a founding artist of style, and a great influence for the Impressionists. He was initially classified as neoclassical, although later he was recognized as the founder of the Romantic Movement, which took place in the first 30 years of the twentieth century. Two of his most famous works are: “Greece Expiring on the Ruins of Missolonghi” painting that is part of the permanent exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts in Bordeaux, and the “Women of Algiers in their apartment” which is part of the Louvre Museum, these two works are featured in the exhibition you can visit from the 23rd of October in Madrid CaixaForum. Besides these pictures, there are about 100 works by the painter, which also includes lithographs and his famous paintings done in North Africa.

The exhibition is part of a collaboration agreement between “la Caixa” and the Louvre Museum, the largest ever conducted in Spain so far, it exposes almost all of the artist’s work with some lectures and specialized guides. If your next destination is Madrid, do not miss it, as it will be on display until the 15th of January, so you have plenty of time to get to know the work of this great French artist.
