What does Madrid suggest to you? Maybe words such as hustle, capital, asphalt, traffic, etc. have passed through your head. What would you say if I told you that the word that I’m looking for is nature? Yeah, you’ve read correctly: Madrid is nature! In the heart of the capital or even a few kilometres away there are huge green areas and exceptional natural spaces. Parks such as the Buen Retiro, the Casa de Campo or such spectacular spots as the Lagunas del Sur, the Hayedo de Montejo and the Parque Natural de la Cumbre or the Sierra de Guadarrama national park, are just a few examples of the greener Madrid – Madrid nature!

Madrid is not just culture, tourism and nightlife. The capital offers a host of healthy activities to do. Nature lovers will enjoy hundreds of sports, games and activities such as agritourism in farms, hiking, climbing, paintball, horseback riding, biking, canoeing, or just enjoying a delicious and relaxing picnic. The contact with nature is always direct and totally respectful with the environment
The Montejo Beech Forest is one of the greatest natural treasures of Madrid. This is a 250 hectare beech forest situated on the foothills of the Sierra de Ayllón. This was declared a Natural Place of National Interest in 1974. Many of its trees are over 20 metres high and some of them even have its own name, as La Roca, which is more than 250 years old. Among the most common fauna there are wild boars, foxes, otters, wild cats, water birds etc.
The Cumbre Natural Park, Circo and Lagunas de Peñalara are another of Madrid’s green gems. The Cumbre de Peñalara is the highest point of the Guadarrama Mountains and is 2430 metres high.In the southern part it is the Laguna Grande, which has glacier origin. There are several gaps, and there are three glacial cirques (Laguna Grande, Pepe Hernando, Regajo de la Pedriza y del Brezal). Its beautiful landscapes are breathtaking. Madrid nature is for everyone to enjoy!
Those who prefer enjoying green areas in the capital can go to the Casa de Campo, the largest public park of the municipality with an extension of 1,722 hectares. Among its facilities the park has a huge lake, jogging track, and large wooded areas, etc. This is considered the main lung of Madrid together with the Buen Retiro Park. This way, it retains many characteristics of a coppice, which include many species of trees such as pine, aspen, poplar, oak, chestnut, plane, ash or willow, and many herbs.
