With the likelihood of being seen: The Konrad Fischer Collection of Conceptual art at MACBA

Perhaps when the artist Konrad Lueg (Dusserldorf 1939-1996) decided to take the surname Fischer and open up a gallery space in his small hometown, deep down inside he knew that he would become one of the most important curators and collectors of contemporary art.

With a strong spirit of risk and transgression, Fischer decided to open the 13m2 space in 1967. The inaugural exhibit was by Carl Andre, a key figure of American minimalism. However, as the work consisted of several sheets of iron which were impossible to move from one continent to another, Fischer created new standards within the art world: the possibility of the replica. Finally after dedicated hard work, the piece could be reproduced in full. This act opened new possibilities to the field of art and the movement of works within the art world.
With the success of this first show and with a packed schedule and programming, the Gallery before long became an undisputed leader in the field. For nearly two decades, this gallery was central in showcasing new artistic trends, and carried out exhibition after exhibition of groundbreaking conceptual and minimalist art museums and international galleries, while also selling lots of pieces.
During the 90s the Konrad Fischer Galery took on a more curatorial role in numerous high-profile exhibitions and innovative spaces, for example with their section at Documenta 5 in Kassel.
He discovered such visionary artists as Dan Flavin, Mario Merz and Jan Dibbets, and his collector’s archival impulse led him to keep in his possession all sorts of material, such as posters of Los Encuentros de Pamplona (1977), or letters and postcards received from renowned artists. The exhibition will be open until October 12th in MACBA and features over 300 works from different artist. Rent apartments in Barcelona, and don’t miss this fabulous exhibit, a must see for those who like conceptual art.
