Joan Miró in Barcelona: The ladder of escape.
Oct 28th, 2011 by apartmentblogger
The first major retrospective about Joan Miro arrived in Barcelona.
Since last spring, the bright colors and exuberant imagination of Joan Miró invaded the Tate Gallery in London. This is the first retrospective exhibition on the great Catalan artist, organized by the famous modern British art gallery in collaboration with the Fundació Joan Miró in Barcelona, which was named: The Ladder of escape.

Starting in October 2011, the citizens of Barcelona and art lovers can visit this impressive collection of works by the great painter and sculptor Joan Miró. The exhibition, in fact, is intended, to come to Barcelona in October and then “move” to Washington. The project brought together 150 works from the most relevant museums around the world. Also, many private collections, including the Centre Georges Pompidou and Thyssen, are involved in the project that will fascinate everyone.
Thanks to this impressive collection, visitors will be able to understand Miró’s artistic career: from the first paintings he made in Catalonia, influenced by expressionism, naïve, surrealism (defined by the artist as “the assassination of painting”) and abstract art for their later years.
Painter, sculptor, engraver and ceramist, Joan Miró was born in Barcelona in 1893 and died in Palma de Mallorca in 1983. The artist is considered as one of the leading exponents of Surrealism. The artistic movements of Fauvism, Cubism and Expressionism influenced his works, specially the ones done during his first years as an artist in Barcelona, when the artist’s attention was put on everything in his child’s world.
His departure to Paris in 1929, a necessary step for artists of the era, marked the beginning of the dream’s states, which is typical of the Paris works. And Paris was for the artist as a second home. Shortly before his death he was awarded, among other awards worldwide, with the Gold Medal of Fine Arts and the Legion of Honor.
The best “gift” that he gave to his city of origin is the Miró Foundation, which collects many of his works and documents. Those lucky enough to visit the exhibition “Ladder of escape” will have the opportunity to see works such as: Dog Barking at the Moon and the Constellations series.
For this exhibition, , the Foundation has developed a series of activities that revolve around the artist and will start from October 2011 to continue until March 2012, date until when this first major exhibition will be held in Barcelona.
The initiatives included: academic conferences, round tables, documentary series, a guided tour of “Joan Miró Barcelona,” a laboratory in which the public can actively participate and discover the artist within themselves and many other cultural activities. Among all, the most curious initiative is in the Metro (MTB), which you can admire an illustrated chronology of Joan Miró at Diagonal stop. For more details: http://fundaciomiro-bcn.org/
