International Tanzfest in Berlin

In 1988 the TanzWerkstatt Berlin was founded to support and present new approaches to international contemporary dance. The festival welcomes dance creations that are open to influences from other media and willing to experiment with new forms. The International Dance Festival Berlin “Tanz in Berlin” (Dance in Berlin) will take place for the 22nd time. Choreographers have been chosen to explore their creative roots and re-examine their development as artists by taking a new look at work from their past.

The programme features new performances and creations by artists from all over the world. Be prepared for cutting-edge works that brings current trends and developments to light. Aside from dance performances there will be talks, labs, workshops, and interventions. A novelty this year is the Sommer.Bar, a place where you can eat, relax and enjoy live events and get a chance to meet the artists that perform. Massages are offered and you will be able to buy the latest books on dancing in the mobile book store. Performances will take place at various venues. The discussion forums and workshops for professional dancers and choreographers will be held by known artists. The focus of the events this year is coaching and mentoring projects for newcomers on the scene.

One of the highlights this years is titled “Look at me, I’m Chinese”. Choreographed by two Germans, Jutta Hell and Dieter Baumann, this piece was created in China with dancers from Beijing, Guangzhou and Shanghai. It expresses the transition that China is going through and questions the relation between culture and body, individual life and collective experience. It opens the viewers’ eyes to a young Chinese generation that is self-confident and willing to test their individual identities and social restraints.
