Berlin is preparing for the World Championships in Athletics 2009
Every passionate fan of athletics, PREPARE YOURSELF! You don’t have to wait desperately for three long years for the Olympic Games in London to start. One of the most important sporting events is coming soon to Berlin: the World Championships in Athletics 2009.
Between the 15th and 23rd of August Germany’s capital will be the host for the maximum international competition in athletics to be held in the breath-taking Olympic stadium. The 12th World Championships in Athletics 2009 are organized by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF). During those exciting summer days the world seems to be in an exceptional situation, whether the millions of spectators in many countries following the competitions on TV, or the lucky visitors who can enjoy this spectacular event live in the Olympic stadium.
More than 2,500 of the best athletes from over 200 different countries will compete in 47 exciting disciplines for the beloved medals. So you will have the possibility of enjoying spectacular competitions in the various disciplines, like sprints, middle distance and long distance events, the breath-taking hurdles, long jump, high jump, discus and javelin, etc. You will be part of all these competitions in a unique atmosphere full of emotion and strong feelings.
One of the most fascinating disciplines is without any doubt the marathon through the German capital. On 22nd and 23rd of August the marathons will cross almost the whole city and pass the most important monuments, streets and places of Berlin. The starting signal will be fired a the beautiful Pariser Platz. Then the athletes run in direction Potsdamer Platz and Siegessäule, passing the wonderful Bellevue Palace, the German Reichstag, as well as over the historical important boulevard Unter den Linden to the famous Brandenburger Tor and the well known Museum Island. As you can see, you will be very close to the athletes to cheer them on and encourage them. In addition, you can participate in the so called Champions Run where thousands of amateur runners will take part in a similar marathon distance like the brilliant athletic stars. So, you will commence on an authentic trip through Germany’s grand capital.
Apart from the athletic highlights, you can submerge yourself in the cultural world. Berlin offers you an amazing programme of cultural events in the fantastic KulturStadion (“culture stadium”) which will be constructed next to the Brandeburg Gate. Under the motto “Body - The Art of Movement” they will organize many workshops, activities, conferences, expositions of art, photography, performances, concerts and all kinds of events which will entice you.

It’s a spectacular place where thousands of passionate fans follow the live transmissions from the Olympic stadium projected on huge screens.
