Grec Festival in Barcelona
Jul 2nd, 2010 by apartmentblogger
Summer has arrived in the city, and with it, one of Barcelona’s most exciting festivals: the Grec Festival, which this year takes place from June 13th to August 1st. Do not be fooled by the name. Although a performance of a contemporary interpretation of the Eurydice and Prometheus myth opened the event, it is not at all a festival dedicated to classical Greek tragedy. “Grec” refers to one of the festival’s main stage, the Teatre Grec, an amphitheatre at the foot of Montjuïc.

This is an event which presents theatre, dance, concerts and circus performances that highlight a variety of innovative and experimental works. Many events are free, or low-cost. This year, attention is directed towards the East. The guest country is Japan. Joan Ollé will direct a performance of Yukio Mishima Nu´s work from June 27-July 11. As always there will be nights devoted to artist with many years of success behind them, for example, the beloved Joan Manuel Serrat will perform from July 5th to the 9th.
The 2010 edition expands its horizons by tapping the field’s most innovative music. The installation by Ryoji Okeda, which took place on 17 June in the Teatro Grec, is the result of collaboration with the internationally recognized Sonar (Advanced Music Festival and Art Multimedia). Is this the beginning of a fruitful shared future for the two festivals? To see how this promising coupling develops we’ll have to wait until next summer!
Besides the already mentioned Teatre Grec, there will be entertainment on several stages and outdoors (Plaza del Rey, Caixaforum yard …) and also in theatres and other venues (Lliure Theatre, Auditorium, Mercat de les Flors …)
Don’t miss out on Caixaforum Nits, with free concerts every Wednesday night (from the 7th until the July 28th of July) and Nights of Music (July 8-29) at the Fundació Joan Miró.
