A beautiful redhead secretary, dressed in an elegant black skirt and white shirt, is firmly tied to a long horizontal pole which rests on her shoulders and keeps her hands apart. However, she manages to perfectly staple a sheet with her mouth, serve coffee with sugar and walk gracefully in her high heels to the boss´s office and close the door tightly behind her …
And so begins the cult movie Secretary, released in 2002 and starring James Spader and Maggie Gyllenhaal: a romantic comedy unlike traditional ones which shows the birth and development of a sado-masochistic relationship between a dominant boss and a submissive secretary … A relationship which to the surprise of everyone works out just fine.
There are many reasons why Secretary has become a cult classic for fans of sadomasochism around the world, but the most obvious is that it is one of the few films that offers the general public a nice, positive and credible portrait of a real BDSM relationship. Until this point, the vast majority of Hollywood movies about sadomasochism cast it in a dark and sinister role, appearing either as a perversion or as dangerous killer or character defect. In Secretary, however, the BDSM is presented as something pleasurable and healing, and the discovery and acceptance of their sexual orientation allows Gyllenhaal´s character to overcome her self-destructive tendencies and Spader’s character to face his self-imposed solitude and misanthropy.
This appreciation of the film by the sadomasochistic community means you can find it in any self-respecting BDSM video library and means it’s often programmed as part of BDSM tinged cycles of thematic film or on other occasions.
