Gabriel Orozco in the Pompidou Centre
Sep 30th, 2010 by apartmentblogger
Gabriel Orozco is a multidisciplinary artist who was born in Jalapa, Mexico in 1962. He attended the Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México in Mexico City and the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid. After his education he travelled a lot and spent time living in places such as New York and Berlin. As an artist, he rejects national or regional identifications, drawing his inspiration from the different places he has lived or stayed in. Currently he lives between Mexico, New York and Paris.
In the 90s he began to establish an international reputation for himself and today he is recognized as one of the leading artists of his generation. His works draw from Conceptualism and readymades from Duchamp. He works with everyday objects and has a great interest in urban landscapes and the human body.
Orozco works in diverse mediums, including sculpture, photography, video, drawing, and installation. For more than 20 years he has constantly dissolved the boundaries between the art object and the everyday environment where art and reality are combined. Movement, expansion, circularity, and the conjunction of the organic and the geometrical are recurrent themes.
Especially for this exhibition at the Centre Pompidou, Orozco has come up with an original layout based on the idea of an artist’s studio. His works will be displayed in a space with no internal walls, labelling or commentary. By doing that he wants to channel the moment of their creation.
The exhibition started September 15 and will run until January 3, 2011. If you are an art fanatic a great time to visit Paris during the Foire internationale d’art contemporain (FIAC) which is the most important French art fair and this year it takes place from October 21 until October 24. Book a vacation to Paris and rent apartments in Paris for your stay to soak up as much art as possible.
