Berlin is one of the more active cities in the European musical scene, especially when it is about electronic music. The city offers a great deal of spaces to go dancing and places to listening to good music, especially for those lovers of minimal techno or electronic style in its broadest sense.
Among the Berliner djs we can’t forget Modselektor, a group formed by Gernot Bronsert and Sebastian Szary, two musicians that reject every kind of label to describe their style. In fact, it is about some electronic music highly influenced by the genre IDM (“Intelligent dance music”, born in the British rave environment in the 90’s), glitch (a particular style of electronic music that favours the use of the mistake), electro and hip hop. The members of Modselektor started their musical performances in illegal parties in the city, and are now one of the favourite groups of Thom Yorke, Radiohead’s leader, who recommended their album in several interviews and added his theme “Silikon” (belonging to the LP “Hello Mom!”, 2005) in an Itunes playlist available to the public.
The members of Modselektor are part of another project called Moderat, which joined several Radiohead tours in Praga and Popznan in August, 2009.
Moderat are Modselektor and Apparat, a young dj from Berlín, equally devoted to electronic music. Apparat, whose real name is Sascha Ring, is a German musician living in Berlin, and one of the owners of the record label Shitkatapult. Apparat started playing techno around Berliner dance floors to later devote to “ambient” music and found himself a passionate for the design of the sound, more than for the “beat” itself. In 2007, he formed his own band to play the album “Walls” live. This project counted with musicians such as Raz Ohara (piano) and Jörg Waehner (drums). In May 2009 he made the album “Moderat” with the BPitch Control, after collaborating in the EP named “Auf Kosten Der Gesundheit”, produced in 2002. In April 2009 he was awarded with the Qwartz Dancefloor, a famous electronic music award and his theme “Holdon” can be listen in the film “Light the wick”.
He has been collaborating for several years with the dj Ellen Alien. Together they produced the album “Berlinette” (2003) and “Orcherstra of Bubbles” (2006). Ellen Alien, born in 1969, is another essential dj in the Berliner artistic scene. Her real name is Ellen Fraatz, and is an electronic music dj, producer and founder of the record label BPitch Control. She lives in Berlin and compounds themes in English and German. In several interviews she said that one of her greater inspirations to compound music was the reunification of Berlin, and her album “Stadtkind” is dedicated to the city. Her music tends to be difficult to classify in an only style, and is better described as a mixture of IDM and electro, although several experimental elements are stressed in her compositions.
If you wish to learn more about Berlin’s electronic scene you can rent apartments in Berlin and devote a weekend to the local music.?
