The Cruïlla Music Festival

This July, Barcelona has a special festival, which will be like getting a Christmas present in July. This great gift will allow you to chill out and enjoy the world’s most interesting sounds within a stone’s throw of the centre: For the 2010 edition, the Cruïlla Music Festival will be held in Barcelona, instead of in the town of Mataró, which means the intense rhythms of afrobeat, reggae, rock and hip-hop will be more accessible than ever. There will be one more day of music, very good news for the most energetic fans.

Tickets for the two day festival cost 60 euros and well worth it: you will see concerts by such artists as Alpha Blondy, Macaco, The Wailers, Muchachito Bombo, Femi Kuti, Love Of Lesbian, Ben Harper and Eli “Paperboy” Reed. And of course, many more! Save the date, because the 16 and 17 July, the Parc del Forum will come alive, and fill with rhythms from around the world. The park is easily accessible from any point in the centre by metro, just get off at the Maresme Forum stop, and if you want to party after the concert, be sure to stroll through the nearby neighbourhoods Poblenou and Bogatell, where you’ll find a scene that’s a little more “underground” than in the centre.

Founded in 2005, the focus of this festival is world music, and it brings together some amazing groups from the farthest corners of the world. You will hear Afro-beat, reggae, hip-hop, Catalan pop music and the “mestizaje” which put Barcelona on the musical map (think groups like Manu Chao): a bit of everything that will make for a couple of very special summer evenings livelier than you could imagine.

Especially if you’re a fan of reggae and Afrobeat, this festival is an essential event. There will be songs in Dioula, French, Castilian, Catalan and English, and good vibes everywhere.
