When it comes to traditions and good living, eating ‘churros’ (deep-fried dough strips) with hot chocolate is one of the best things to do in Barcelona. So, if you were thinking of spending a few nice days in this city, we’ll give you some clues on the ideal places to enjoy the goodness of cocoa and the taste of ‘churros’.

One of the most traditional places in the city is Café de l’Òpera. Located on the Ramblas, it’s one of the last Catalan bourgeois strongholds in the city and, during the 60s and 70s, it became the meeting place for intellectuals in the city. Here you can enjoy a good hot chocolate accompanied by the fresh and tasty ‘churros’.
Another place for chocolate tradition is La Pallaresa, located on Petritxol 11, right in the heart of Barcelona. Here you can eat a nice cup of hot chocolate with delicious cakes and sweets. They’re open from Monday to Saturday from 9am till 1pm and from 4pm till 9pm and on Sundays from 9am till 1pm and from 5pm till 9pm. The prices won’t be a problem, a cup of hot chocolate costs 2.60€ and the ‘churros’ 1.50€.
Next door, on number 2 of Petritxol, there’s Dulcinea, an ideal place to eat a nice and comforting hot chocolate and ‘churros’.
In the Gràcia district you can find another place where hot chocolate can be a unique pleasure. It’s called La Nena, located on Ramon y Cajal 36. Here they prepare the hot chocolate with fresh milk and, if you don’t want ‘churros’, you can accompany it with homemade fruit cakes. It’s open from Monday to Friday from 9am till 2pm and from 4pm till 10pm.
Also in Gràcia there’s Cacao Sampaka, an elegant chocolate shop that produces more than 100 different types of this exquisite food and, in its cafeteria, you can sample its hot chocolate. Cacao Sampaka is located on Consell de Cent 292.
La Granja is another of the places that you can’t miss if you’re a chocolate fan. Located in the Gothic district, on Banys Nous 4, its prestige is in its great flavour and unique service. Here you can taste the true traditional flavour of the ‘churrería’ at great prices. Its opening hours are from Monday to Saturday from 9.30am till 9.30pm and on Sundays and holidays from 5pm till 9.30pm.
If you don’t just want hot chocolate in a cup, we invite you to delight yourself with this sweet pleasure in bars or in small chocolates at Xocoa, a chain whose name comes from a mix of cocoa and ‘xocolata’ (chocolate in Catalan). Created in 1897, it makes different chocolate varieties, chocolate bars and chocolate cakes. As well as chcolate bars, it has products for cosmetics, costumes and souvenirs for chocolate fans. There are shops all over the city.
An additional point: in the whole of Barcelona there are vans that sell delicious ready-made ‘churros’. They are clean, healthy and tasty.
If this winter you want to spend a holiday in apartments in Barcelona and enjoy the local pleasures, come to enjoy yourself with this tradition that, according to science, is an aphrodisiac and improves one’s mood.
