Since immemorial time, indigenous groups in the western Amazon use a kind of tea, a beverage that has powers to alter the consciousness and has been used for a variety of purposes, primarily of shamanic type, to contact the spirit world.

The tea is made from psychotic viridis sheets, which is very rich in DMT, a non-hallucinogenic psychoactive. And also from a vine, banisteriopsis caapi. This combination makes the DMT ingested have a very strong psychoactive effect.
So, Ayahuasca is the cha, the Amazon tea par excellent. In this region, the ayahuasca has been used ceremonially for long ago as a sacred drink. The word is of Quechua origin and means “vine that connects the world of the living people with the spirits”. The literal translation of Quechua would be: Aya – Death / Huasca – vine. “The vine of souls.” Therefore, it is used to connect to the magical worlds in the “expansion of consciousness”. It can also be used to purify and heal the spirit, body, mind and emotions. For a better understanding of shamanism and ritual use of ayahuasca Edward MacRae, psychologist and social anthropologist from Brazil, who has written on this plant and its uses. Among his works, you can see, “Guided by the Moon”(Abya-Yala Ediciones, Quito-Ecuador 1998).
It is also a tool that proving to be useful in certain therapeutic approaches and self-knowledge. It is being studied for time by physicians, pharmacists, psychologists and psychiatrists around the world as a therapy for various problems. Its use in detoxification and addiction is a fact, taking shape as one of the leading treatments for drug addiction and depression, anxiety or schizophrenia. One of the most important programs in this field is the Institute for Applied Amazon Ethnopsychology, which integrate different methods and disciplines of self-awareness and personal development.
Before ingesting Ayahuasca, ideally, people have to go through a process of physical purification, mental and spiritual. Normally it is recommended not to eat meat, not to practise intercourse and not to take drugs.
Ayahuasca ceremonies are performed at night. Darkness allows or causes a confrontation and conquest our deepest fears, revitalizes life energies and attracts higher level of consciousness. They are always accompanied by green Mapacho snuff smoke (which removes negative energies) and the singing of an Icarus (shamanic singing, symbolizing its power). The idea is to open the way to the the light within ourselves.
What are its effects or states? After taking ayahuasca one experiences from a state of reflection, going through regression and travel or transmigration of the soul, sharpened senses and finally expansion of consciousness. But not everything is good, it can also cause a bad trip (uncomfortable sensations of dizziness, nausea, fear and repressed paranoia) and can often cause vomiting and diarrhea, physical effects which, although annoying, are considered as symptoms of purification and cleansing.
There is an interesting documentary that was once quite successful in Barcelona, where the director (Jesus Becerril Alborne) shows first-hand the different uses of this brew (in Brazil) and their effects after intake: Ayahuasca. The Vine of Souls (Xusifilms. Brazil-Barcelona, 2005). You can find it on YouTube in five parts.
In Barcelona, through Icaro Association we can participate in ayahuasca ceremonies. Icarus is a nonprofit association created in 1997 whose objective is to know the human being and its ways of improvement. It defines its work in the field of Western techniques of psychology, while making use of shamanic healing therapies in the Amazonian tradition. Its founder is Fernando Latorre Vazquez, a graduate psychologist and sex therapist in Barcelona Graduate School of Economics, in order to bring to Spain Amazonian Medicinal Plants. Icarus Association holds monthly Ayahuasca workshops and sections in Barcelona for small groups of 7 people. For further information, you can visit their website: http://www.asociacionicaro.org/.
Mather Ayahuasca (…). Take me to your magical world, give me a lot of wisdom, love and great strength. (…).

As you can see, there is no need to go to the Amazon to experience with the Ayahuasca. If you are looking for Barcelona accommodation you can participate in ayahuasca ceremonies and live a real expansion of consciousness.
