Antic Teatre, art and bar in Barcelona
Jun 1st, 2011 by apartmentblogger
Barcelona has always been defined by its highly diverse cultural scene. The theatre has always been a thriving creative thread, and the city and its different spaces has been a platform for this, from the established artists to the new, young talent. The circuit of theatres in Barcelona covers many different spaces and rooms. And one of these is Antic Teatre; a must-see for artists, citizens and tourists alike.

The theatre is at number 2, Vergaduer i Callis Street, just in front of the main door of the Palau de la Música Catalana. It is a place which attracts a range of different types of person – it has a unique style of socio-cultural fusion, and many people go there for a drink, to meet up with friends, as well as check its many different shows and projects. And the promoters of the place have managed to establish a creative space with a great atmosphere, which is both a bar and top location for contemporary cultural activity in Barcelona. There’s a multi-functional room, a garden, a terrace with a bar, and wifi connection. The theatre has a capacity of 70, with the terrace around the same – though it often fills up more on a Friday night.
The place we know today as Antic Teatre-Espai de Creacio was originally called Circulo Barcelones de Obreros de San José, and was founded in 1879 by architect Joan Martorell. In 2003, it came to be opened as a non-profit creative space, and after a while, the previously closed theatre room underwent a much needed renovation and reopened in 2010. The building has been declared a cultural heritage of the San Pere neighbourhood.
The theatre has placed host to whole range of shows, from the renowned to the novices. Shows which combine music, dance, theatre – festivals, with electo DJs, and cinema series (which take place during the summer outdoors on the terrace), book conferences, poetry readings, concerts…etc, with company Cia Semolina Tomic coordinating the programme.
In previous years, one had to be a member to enjoy the different spaces in the building, including the bar and terrace – but not anymore. Now it is a favourite spot for those wishing to take a break, and escape the high pace of the city. With its views of the Modernist building Palau, the Antic Teatre offers a little hideaway, right in the centre of Barcelona city. Open every day of the year, until around 11pm.
