Angela Bulloch in Madrid’s Casa Encendida
May 28th, 2010 by apartmentblogger

Angela Bulloch was born in 1966 in Ontario, Canada and currently lives and works in Berlin and London. She studied at Goldsmiths’ College in London, and in 1997 was nominated for the famous Turner Prize award. In the 90s she joined a group called “Young British Artists” a movement defined by a series of exhibitions at the Saatchi Gallery which used new and innovative materials.
Her art is rich with meaning and includes photographs, texts, installations and videos. For this great woman, it is important to connect art with the audience, and encourage interaction. Both literature and cinema are sources of inspiration for her. Directors like Kurosawa and Kubrick have influenced her art.
Her first experiments with interactivity are reflected in 1991 in “Pushmepullme,” or once again in 1994 with “Betaville”, in which the artist used a machine that shows lines on the wall, which are activated by people’s sounds and movement.
Another of her best known works is undoubtedly “Pixel Box”: minimalist cubes related to light, colour, object, space, which play movie scenes and music.
This renowned artist exhibited in Madrid last year with “Smoked Sphere”, another great work based on the work of Bridget Riley’s White Discs II, in which we can see transparent spheres, lamps and cables that appear placed on a white surface. An installation which, intentionally or not, confused viewers.
This year, Angela Bulloch returns to Madrid. Sound Art brings 50 geniuses to Madrid, specifically to the ” Casa Encendida ” until 30 June. Here we see a sculpture by the artist entitled “disenchanted forest” (see photo above), which consists of a false ceiling and a floor created by metal plates, connected by light strings. This together with the soundtrack of electronic music is really amazing.
If you do not want to miss the work of this prolific artist, do not hesitate to rent apartments in Madrid to see her magnificent exhibition at the “Casa Encendida”.
