For the second time in a row, Naples will once again play host to one of the most anticipated sailing regattas worldwide. The world’s fastest boats and the world’s most skillful sailors will convene in the city of Naples for the next America’s Cup World Series event, which takes place April 16 through 21, 2013.
Naples is getting ready and plans to have a number of additional events to be held in conjunction with the big event. These will be organized with the help of the city’s eight sailing clubs. Starting on April 13, historical Neapolitan sailboats will be put on display. Then, on April 16, the America’s Cup World Series catamarans will take to the water to compete for the coveted Grande Vela Trophy.
The America’s Cup World Series is a series of race regattas that takes place in two seasons. At the end of each circuit, a World Series champion is crowned based on the scores they have accumulated from each event. The event in Naples is the third event in the 2012/2013 America’s Cup World Series. The first and second events took place August 21 through 26 and October 2 through 7 in San Francisco, California. This series will conclude in May 2013.
The boats used in the America’s Cup World Series are the AC45 catamarans. This wingsail catamaran was designed specifically for the event by the Oracle Team USA design and engineering team. They can reach speeds of more than 30 knots. Interestingly, not only did these ships have to meet race and performance criteria but they also had to be small enough to fit into the 40-foot shipping containers that are used to get them to the race locations.
In Naples, the teams will travel close to the shore from Rotonda Diaz to Pozzuoli. Many thousands of spectators are expected to come out and support the teams while watching from the coasts of cities including Naples, Pozzuoli, Posillipo and Bagnoli.
Eleven teams will take part in the Naples regatta. After the previous two races, some teams have a large lead over others. Currently, Oracle Team USA – Spithill is in the lead with 165 points. It’s followed by Luna Rossa – Piranha with 121 points. Close by is the Artemis Racing White team with 120 points. They are followed by J.P. Morgan BAR, Team Korea, Energy Team, Emirates Team New Zealand, Oracle Team USA – Coutts, Artemis Racing Red, Luna Rossa – Swordfish, and China Team.
